Are there speech/debate opportunities for my teen in Allegheny County?
Answer
- There are more than 50 area high schools who are part of the Pittsburgh District of the National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA). About 30 of those teams are currently active. In addition, the North Allegheny HS tournament is a qualifier for Tournament of Champions (TOC) and National Individual Events Tournament of Champions (NIETOC) this year.
- Linked below is a list of schools in the Pittsburgh District of the NSDA, indicating which schools had active programs during the 2019-2020 school year (based on points recorded with the national office). The NSDA website also has descriptions of their events: https://www.speechanddebate.org/competition-events/
- There is also a Pennsylvania High School Speech League (PHSSL) which operates the state tournament (essentially the speech & debate equivalent of PIAA).
Their member schools can be found here: https://aa25f467-86b3-42b4-9a62-9948838a8af6.filesusr.com/ugd/9f057a_f25b48ac034a4b2587694a91d0dda6ca.pdf and descriptions of their events can be found here: https://www.phssl.org/events
- Many Pittsburgh schools who are members of NSDA and PHSSL are also members of the National Catholic Forensics League (NCFL). Here is a list of their events: http://ncfl.org/NCFLnew/pages/ncfl-events.html
Fun fact: Pittsburgh hosted the NCFL Grand National Tournament in 2002.
